Jadon Sancho explains England star Raheem Sterling helped inspire him as he quit Man City | Football | Sport

Jadon Sancho took inspiration from seeing Raheem Sterling step out of his comfort zone as he geared up for his move to Borussia Dortmund two years ago.

Sancho quit Manchester City for the Bundesliga giants in 2017 after seeing his path into the first-team picture blocked.

The 19-year-old Camberwell-born winger has since thrived and become one of the most highly-rated youngsters on the planet.

Sancho’s move to Dortmund was not the first time he’d upped sticks during his fledgling career, having started out with Watford prior to being scooped up by City.

He’s now opened up about how leaving the Etihad for Signal Iduna Park came about – with Raheem Sterling’s own story cited as inspiration.

“When I left Manchester I just took that as a challenge – to try to prove people wrong,” Sancho said.

“And when you do, there is no better feeling than that. I knew in my gut it was the right time to move and I just believed.

“Raheem is someone I can really relate to. Like me, he is from London and has been through the same sort of pathway as me.

“He went from QPR to Liverpool and then to Manchester. He has shown what is possible if you believe.”

Sancho will be in action for England on Friday night as the Three Lions continue their Euro 2020 qualification campaign with a trip to the Czech Republic.

And his family will be watching on, no doubt bursting with pride as he makes his mark on the international stage.

Sancho’s mum has backed him every step of the way during his career, support he’s always been grateful for.

“It was my mum who drove me on,” Sancho said. “I just remember her telling me to stay focused, and telling me she was always there for me if I ever needed her to come and see me.

“So I just wanted to play my best and make her proud of what I could achieve.”

Sancho’s call-up to the latest England squad came after he netted three goals and provided five assists for Borussia Dortmund in his first seven games of the Bundesliga season.

And he will be eager to star too when Gareth Southgate’s follow up their visit to Prague by taking on Bulgaria in Sofia on Monday night.
