Michael Flynn is a retired US Army Lieutenant General who was brought in to the Trump administration by Ivanka, with the support of her husband Jared Kushner and brothers Donald Jnr and Eric. Mr Flynn initially ingratiated himself to Donald Trump by starting the “lock her up” chant about Hillary Clinton at the Republican National Convention. However, he served the administration for less than a month and, in 2017, pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI in relation to the Special Counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

When he was first brought in, however, it was Ivanka who championed him during the transition period after her father Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election but before he officially took office.

Two days after the election, on November 11 at 11am, Vice President-elect Mike Pence and Chris Christie chaired a meeting.

According to 2019 book Kushner Inc, Ivanka praised Mr Flynn for “his amazing loyalty to my father” and then asked him what job he wanted.

A person in the meeting told The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer: “It was like Princess Ivanka had laid the sword on Flynn’s shoulders and said: ‘Rise and go forth.’”

Mr Flynn said he wanted to be a National Security Adviser and thus he was appointed.

This was despite a warning from outgoing President Barack Obama.

The day before, Mr Trump had a one-on-one meeting with Mr Obama, who reportedly gave him two pieces of advice.

The first was that the biggest problem for the new President was the nuclear threat from North Korea, and the second was a warning against hiring Mr Flynn.

According to Kushner Inc author Vicky Ward, he said: “He’ll cause you nothing but problems.”

After the meeting, Mr Trump told his campaign chief Steve Bannon: “Obama is a cool guy. I like him. He likes me. You’d like him.”

He reportedly never felt as positive about Mr Flynn after that.

Nevertheless, Ivanka was firmly in his corner and ensured that he got the job he wanted.

As a result, Mr Flynn was loyal to Ivanka and Jared, and had no issue with them making a request to put in for security clearances, despite concerns from other members of the team.

One senior campaign official told Ms Ward they realised why Ivanka had been so eager to “reward” Mr Flynn’s loyalty.

They said: “Flynn is totally malleable. Jared and Ivanka released it would be a client relationship.”

However, the very fact she managed to secure him a top job demonstrates the power Ivanka had and still has in the Trump administration, despite only holding an extremely vague advisory role.

Indeed, many people around the President-elect were concerned about the idea of bringing his daughter and son-in-law into the administration, not only due to anti-nepotism laws but also because of the power they had over him.

Michael Cohen, Mr Trump’s longtime attorney was against them coming in, because he knew “Trump hated telling Ivanka ‘no’”.

Right-wing media personality Anne Coulter also warned Mr Trump against it, saying: “Nobody is apparently telling you this, but you can’t. You can’t just hire your children.”

However, in the end, the Office of Legal Counsel allowed it and Mr Bannon said: “I think we might need them.

“Our craziest moments of the campaign, the really craziest moments, even Hope [Hicks] can’t get to him.

“Only Jared and Ivanka can talk him down off the ledge.”

Despite having Ivanka in his corner however, the story did not end too well for Mr Flynn as things quickly spiralled out of control in terms of the Russia investigation.

After being formally appointed National Security Adviser on January 23, 2017, he resigned less than a month later after information surfaced that he had misled the FBI and the Vice President about the nature and content of his communications with Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak.

In April, the Pentagon inspector general announced an investigation into whether Mr Flynn had accepted money from foreign governments without the required approval.

In December 2017, he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, but his sentencing has since been deferred numerous times.
