Christian Horner says it would be a “no-brainer” for Red Bull to extend Sergio Perez’s contract as things stand.

The Mexican driver, who played a key role in helping teammate Max Verstappen become World Champion last year, will see his current deal expire at the end of the 2022 season.

In his first year with the team, Perez placed on the podium five times and scored the second victory of his career in Baku.

“He’s doing a great job,” Horner said, speaking to North American outlet The Athletic in Miami.

Horner: As long as he keeps doing what he’s doing

Providing Perez keeps up this form, Horner sees no reason to change the dynamic at Red Bull.

“Everybody’s happy with him on the team,” continued the Red Bull team boss.

“If we had to make a decision today, of course, we would want to extend. As long as he keeps doing what he’s doing, it will be a no-brainer.”

What next for Gasly if Perez stays at Red Bull?

Horner’s admission comes at a time when Red Bull driver Pierre Gasly, now aged 26, will be pondering his own future with the team.

The Frenchman is into his third full season with AlphaTauri since being demoted by Red Bull after a difficult half-campaign alongside Verstappen.

Since then, Gasly has climbed onto the podium twice, once on the top step after taking a historic win at Monza, and remains within the Red Bull stable.
