Horner: No desire to change AlphaTauri lineup unless “interesting driver” available

Christian Horner says there is no desire to change the lineup at AlphaTauri unless an “interesting driver” becomes available to join the Formula 1 grid.

Speculation has grown over whether IndyCar driver Colton Herta will join the Red Bull sister-team for 2023, with Horner calling him an “exciting” and “standout” talent in the US.

“I think he’s an exciting talent and he’s a young and American guy that’s been a standout talent in the US. So it’ll be very interesting to see how he performs in Formula 1,” Horner told media, including RacingNews365.com.

“Formula 1 has got growing popularity in the US market at the moment and to have a successful us driver, could be very interesting.”

Herta currently doesn’t have the required Super Licence points to race in F1, but should he be given an exemption by the FIA, the American has been speculated to replace Pierre Gasly at AlphaTauri.

“I think Pierre is doing a good job within AlphaTauri, so I don’t think there would be a desire to change if there wasn’t an interesting option available.”

AlphaTauri has produced “great stable” of drivers for Red Bull, says Horner

While Red Bull has contracts in place with both their drivers, Horner draws on the history of AlphaTauri producing drivers for them as a way in for Herta joining a top team for the future.

He added: “We’ve got contracts with our existing drivers and AlphaTauri and Toro Rosso have produced a great stable of drivers for us to draw upon, whether it be Sebastian, Max, or Daniel, over the over the years.”
