Helen Fielding studied English at Oxford University and began her working life at the BBC in 1979 as a regional researcher on the news magazine Nationwide. Now with a successful career behind her, how much has she earned?

The hardback of Bridget Jones’s Diary was published in 1996 and the paperback a year later.

It went straight to the top of the best-seller list and stayed there for more than six months.

It went on to become a worldwide best-seller.

She published her second Bridget novel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, in 1999.

By the time the UK paperback was published in 2014, sales had reached one million copies.

An adaptation for the book has not been announced yet.

In her personal life, Helen divides her time between London and Los Angeles.

She and Kevin Curran, a writer and producer on The Simpsons, began a relationship in 2000 and they have two children.

Sadly, Kevin died four years ago, leaving behind Helen, Dashiell and Romy.

In 2014, Helen was one of 20 writers on The Sunday Times list of Britain’s 500 Most Influential and has won many awards and nominations for her work.

Being Bridget Jones is on BBC Two at 9pm tonight.

The description of the programme reads: “Documentary celebrating 25 years of Helen Fielding’s hapless creation. The programme examines how society’s attitudes to women have shifted in 25 years, along with the ways in which female writers have told their own stories since Bridget made her debut.

“Featuring interviews with Helen Fielding, and the friends she based the original characters on, as well as tributes from celebrity fans.”
