How does furlough affect redundancy pay?

If someone on furlough is made redundant, the same rules regarding redundancy pay and notice will still apply.

Stephen Ravenscroft, Partner and Head of Employment at leading London law firm Memery Crystal, told Express.co.uk: “If you are made redundant, whether you are working or on furlough or normal work you will also be protected by terms in your contract or by the statutory rules on redundancy as a minimum.

“You will be entitled to a statutory redundancy payment as long as you have worked for your employer for at least two years.

“Your employer must also give you a minimum notice period, which is generally one week of notice per year of service up to 12 weeks’ notice (unless your contract has a longer notice period which applies) – this means they have to tell you this far in advance before your proposed last day.
