One of the benefits afforded to older people is discounted or even free travel on public transport, but there are multiple discounts available and some people are able to access free travel earlier than others. Here is a full breakdown of the options provided and who is eligible.

Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard is another option available to pensioners which can reduce their transport costs.

It is an annual savings card which makes travelling by train cheaper for retirees.

Unlike the free bus pass, the Senior Railcard must be purchased at a one-off cost each year, and can then be used to make savings on most train fares in the UK.

It can be used for buses, national rail, trams, the underground and river services.

The age at which people become eligible for this pass is in line with the retirement age for women in the UK.

Due to changes made to the state pension age for women, pushing it up to 66 in line with men, people born on or after October 6, 1954 may have to wait longer to become eligible.

Other support

Another option is for people to contact individual travel operators to find out if they offer any discounts for pensioners or older people.

People can also get in touch with their local council to find out if they offer any concessions.
