Fernando Alonso has been hinting on social media about a possible return to F1 next season and reports in France say the Spaniard has signed a pre-agreement with Renault.

There are still plenty of negotiations to be had but Renault are apparently making moves to offer Alonso a third stint with the team.

The 38-year-old won back-to-back Championships with the French manufacturer in 2005 and 2006 and retired from the sport in 2018 after a frustrating spell with McLaren.

Sebastian Vettel sparked a driver merry-go-round when he announced he will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season.

McLaren ace Carlos Sainz will replace Vettel, with Daniel Ricciardo in turn leaving Renault for McLaren.

That opens up a seat at Renault in which Vettel has been tipped to take.

But French magazine Auto Hebdo claim several sources have told them Alonso has penned a pre-agreement to step into Ricciardo’s shoes.

The two-time world champion left F1 to focus on winning the Indy 500 to complete motorsport’s Triple Crown.

However, he had a disastrous attempt last year when he failed to make it out of qualifying – despite 33 of the 36 entrants progressing through to the race.

The Indy 500 is delayed this year because of the coronavirus.

Sky Sports F1 expert Martin Brundle thinks that Renault will consider resigning Alonso.

“I do know Sebastian was talking to at least one team, so clearly retirement is not absolutely on his mind,” he said.

“He’s got to have a chance at Renault if he wants, that’s a works team. You’d worry going into the future, the Concorde Agreement’s coming up and the way the motor industry is at the moment…

“Renault will be lone rangers, they’ll be the only people using Renault engines as of 2021 as McLaren move over to Mercedes, which I think is what’s appealing to Ricciardo.

“I think Alonso is desperate to get back into Formula 1, he’ll be throwing his hat in the ring somewhere. Could it be a third trip to Renault for him?

“If I had to be money on it right now I think it might be Sebastian’s swansong, but we don’t know, and he’s still got great speed. It depends how much money Renault have got to spend, and where Formula 1 finds itself after these difficult times.”
