Twelve-time Formula 1 race winner Carlos Reutemann has been discharged from hospital after two weeks of treatment.

The former Brabham, Ferrari, Lotus and Williams driver was first admitted to hospital in his native Argentina on May 5 following a digestive haemorrhage.

He was initially reported to be in a stable condition, but sadly suffered from internal bleeding a few days later.

The Argentine was subsequently flown by helicopter to an intensive care unit at Rosario’s Sanatorio Parque hospital where he underwent an endoscopic haemostasis procedure after another haemorrhage, and later returned to the general ward.

It was a major milestone in Reutemann’s recovery when he was shown sat up in bed reading a newspaper, an image posted by his daughter Mariana.

And on Friday, May 21 the hospital confirmed Reutemann had been discharged “to continue with his recovery in the city of Santa Fe”, as reported by Motorsport.com and Autosport.

Carlos Reutemann

Reutemann was one of Formula 1’s star drivers throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.

His final full season in the series was 1981, bowing out in style as runner-up to Nelson Piquet in the World Championship. It was the slimmest of margins though as Reutemann missed out on what would have been his only title by just one point.

That season he had been on the podium in all of the first five races, winning the Brazilian and Belgian Grands Prix as part of an impressive career which saw him finish in the top three 45 times.

Following that victory at the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix, Reutemann returned for the 1982 campaign but called it quits two races in, shortly before his 40th birthday.

His surprise exit from the Williams team was rumoured to have been triggered by the Falklands War that was happening at the time between the UK and Argentina.

Reutemann moved into politics beyond his racing career and has served in Argentina’s senate since 2003.
