Drugovich crowned 2022 F2 champion following Monza sprint DNF

MP Motorsport driver Felipe Drugovich was crowned as the 2022 Formula 2 champion in the sprint race in Italy, despite retiring from it.

The Brazilian held a 70 point championship lead over Theo Pourchaire of ART following victory at Zandvoort last week, with just 78 remaining over the remaining rounds in Italy and Abu Dhabi.

Despite retiring from the race after contact on the opening lap with broken suspension, Drugovich’s cushion was unassailable for Frenchman Pourchaire.

He needed to finish at least in fifth place – worth four points – or in sixth with the fastest lap point to carry things on until the feature race on Sunday morning.

Pourchaire was unable to do so, and came home a lowly 17th to ensure Drugovich claimed the title with three races still to spare.

Drugovich is the sixth driver to win the FIA Formula 2 Championship since it was redbaged in 2017.

He follows in the footsteps of Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Nyck de Vries, Mick Schumacher and Oscar Piastri in his third season in F2.

The likes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton were GP2 champions, back in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
