Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says he will not speak about Edouard Mendy despite reports claiming a deal had been done for the Rennes goalkeeper.

Chelsea have been the busiest team in the transfer market and they look set to make a further addition with Mendy set to join.

In 2018, Chelsea broke the transfer record for a goalkeeper when they signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for £71million.

But the transfer has been far from successful with the 25-year-old struggling for form and confidence.

When asked about Mendy joining the club on Sunday, Lampard said: “I don’t have news on the Mendy one, so I will stay away from that. Until anything is confirmed you should never speak on another player.”

Chelsea’s effort to sign a new goalkeeper comes after Kepa’s latest error in the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Already down to 10 men and losing 1-0, Kepa gifted Liverpool their second goal of the match when his attempted pass was read by Sadio Mane and he tapped into an empty net.

After the match, Lampard conceded Kepa had been guilty of another mistake and former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes Kepa’s time is up.

“Andriy Shevchenko at £30m, too. But Kepa surely beats all of us. Sadio Mane’s goals on Sunday meant he had conceded 11 of the last 16 shots he’s faced.

“In football, you always get a chance to redeem yourself. I got that at Celtic, and Kepa might have to go prove himself elsewhere, too. Edouard Mendy cannot arrive from Rennes soon enough for Frank Lampard, who is under big pressure to win a trophy this season.

“Chelsea aren’t the type of club who say: ‘No problem – have another go next season!’ Lampard knows as well as anyone that silverware is a must.

“Though Kepa gave him a gift, we have to applaud Sadio Mane’s endeavour. He was furious with himself for losing the ball. Then five seconds later, he was intercepting Kepa’s attempt at a pass and scoring to make it 2-0.”
