Timo Werner has revealed how Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham told him before kick-off that he would score today against West Ham, as he dedicated his crucial winning strike at the London Stadium to his two team-mates. The German finally found his scoring boots again to turn home Ben Chilwell’s inviting low delivery in the first half.

Chelsea were very comfortable throughout besides a looping effort from Jesse Lingard in the second half.

Werner’s goal was enough to earn the Blues a vital three points in the race for Champions League qualification.

They are now in the driving seat with their fate in their own hands following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle at Anfield earlier this afternoon.

Chelsea forward Werner has been short of confidence in recent months but stopped working and his mentality was rewarded today in east London.

“It was a funny situation and I’m very happy to point to them today.”

Werner then missed the chance to double Chelsea’s lead, when he somehow screwed the ball wide with the whole goal at his mercy following a rebound.

But the former RB Leipzig man denied that he is lacking confidence, despite acknowledging he would have buried the chance last season.

“The confidence was there, I feel it in my legs when I had the ball at my feet that I was confident,” he added.

“At the moment, this season it has been about confidence but also some luck.

“Maybe last year when I hit the ball with my feet, the ball goes in.

“This year it’s been very different but I was very happy that I scored the first.

“The second chances like this, they would also go in last year.”

Chelsea now turn attention to the Champions League semi-final first leg, when they travel to Real Madrid in midweek…
