Cesar Azpilicueta has hailed Chelsea‘s capture of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. The Germany international has signed a five-year contract worth £170,000-a-week after the Blues triggered his €53million (£47.9m) release clause.
Werner will join up with Chelsea in July – subject to passing a medical – after deciding to bail on Leipzig’s Champions League campaign, which resumes the following month.
He is the second signing of what is shaping up to be an exciting summer for the Premier League outfit. Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech had already agreed to join for an initial €40m (£36.1m) in February.
Werner comes with plenty of pedigree having provided 32 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions this season.
The 24-year-old will be expected to replicate that form at Stamford Bridge – and Azpilicueta believes the players and coaching staff need to help him hit the ground running.

“He’s an amazing attacking player with great experience in the Bundesliga,” the Chelsea skipper said.
“He has scored a lot of goals and has got great experience in the Champions League and obviously with the German squad at international level, so this is a big addition for our club.
“He can raise our level. He’s an amazing player. We need to help him find the best position to score goals and to adapt to the league as quickly as possible.
“Hopefully we can be competing for the top next season.”
Werner was a top target for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp before the coronavirus crisis ended his hopes of a move to Anfield.
He is “delighted” to be moving to Stamford Bridge, however, and said: “It is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club.
“I, of course, want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart.
“I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea.
“He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.
“We can’t wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season.”
Chelsea are looking to follow up Werner’s signing by landing Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen and Leicester City‘s Ben Chilwell.
