Chelsea have reportedly made the breakthrough in talks for Ben Chiwell and are now optimistic they can conclude a £50million deal for the England international. A new left-back is high on Frank Lampard’s list of priorities as he looks to fix his leaky defence before the start of next season.
Lampard has admired Chilwell for a while but this season he was a standout performer for Leicester while impressing on the international stage under Gareth Southgate.
Speculation first began when Lampard liked Chilwell’s picture on Instagram after he provided three assists in one match for England against Montenegro.
At this point, the Foxes were soaring in the Premier League and looked certainties for the top four.
Chelsea eventually pipped them to fourth spot with Leicester falling away due to injuries, with Chilwell among those sidelined.
The Blues are said to be making progress during talks with Leicester are remain confident they can shake hands on around £50m.
There is still some way to go before there is a total agreement but Leicester now seem willing to listen to offers below the original £80m.
Chelsea were preparing to explore other options and have discussed several alternatives.
Those include Nicolas Tagliafico, who will be available for around £24m this summer.

Alex Telles of Porto was also on the club’s radar as his contract runs down in Portugal.
Everton’s Lucas Digne has also been earmarked as a potential target while Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguillon could also be up for grabs.
There is also huge appeal for Chelsea in that Chilwell is a homegrown talent.
Brendan Rodgers said on Chilwell’s future: “He’s a Leicester player. He’s not a player that we want to lose. So I’m quite relaxed on it.”
