Celtic legend Chris Sutton has taunted Rangers as the Ibrox side look set to lose their manager Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa. Gerrard has been linked with the vacant managerial role at Villa Park this week after the west Midlands club sacked Dean Smith at the weekend.

Gerrard led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade last season as his side remained unbeaten and racked up 102 points.

The Liverpool hero has overseen big improvements in Glasgow since taking the helm in 2018, and his side are top of the table once again after their first 13 games of the campaign.

As reports emerged that Villa had been granted permission to speak to Gerrard on Wednesday, Sutton took to social media to respond to one of them.

“I thought Steven was happy at Rangers,” Sutton wrote on Twitter.

Gerrard has regularly been asked about his future at Rangers over the last three years and has always claimed that he is only focused on his job in Scotland.

And reports suggest that Gerrard could be unveiled as the new Villains manager before the end of this week.

One man who has backed the 41-year-old to be a success in the west Midlands if he does become a Premier League boss for the first time is Gabby Agbonlahor.

“I’m hearing reports that it’s close to being done,” the former Villa forward told talkSPORT on Wednesday. “I think for Gerrard it’s the perfect club.

“It gets him to the Premier League. Top club, fifth richest owners in the Premier League – they’ll give him money in January if needed.

“And look at the squad – that’s a squad of players that should be fighting to get into the top six.

“It’ll be a shame for Rangers, because he did an outstanding job there.

“When I watch Rangers, they look organised. You see Gerrard’s passion on the side.

“I’m excited for these Villa players if he comes. When he steps in the building, he’s got their respect already.

“Gerrard is no-nonsense, as a player and a manager.”
