Rangers are bottom of Group A with zero goals scored and seven conceded from their opening two fixtures, and now face a difficult double-header against Liverpool knowing they must take some points off the Reds if they are to realistically challenge for qualification.

Despite the negative result for his side, Van Bronckhorst felt his side performed well before the sending off: “Until the red card we gave Napoli a really tough game,” he said.

“We were organised, good in the game and players were giving everything to get a good result. We created chances to open the scoring and it was a nice battle to see, but of course with the sending off we knew it was going to be difficult.”
