Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek on playing Freddie Mercury and opening for Queen | Music | Entertainment

Earlier this year, Rami Malek stormed awards season, picking up gong after gong for his stunning performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. That was before he took the crowning glory of Best Actor for the role at the Oscars. Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, the 38-year-old said of playing Freddie: “It was one of the greatest challenges of my life and absolutely one of the most rewarding as well.” During production on , Malek became friends with Queen stars Brian May and Roger Taylor and had the chance to open for the band’s collaboration with Adam Lambert last weekend.

Queen and Adam Lambert headlined a charity concert in New York’s Central Park, with the Freddie Mercury star making a surprise appearance with them.

On keeping in touch with Queen, Malek said: “Yes, very much so actually.

“We were together…at the Global Citizen Festival…this weekend.

“And I got to open up for them. I was backstage in their dressing room and they said, ‘Hey Rami, how about you walk out with us.’

“So I did the walk that Freddie would do in the past, that I studied for a year over and over.

“I saw him do it so many times, so it was the greatest honour and privilege to do that with them and to be a part of their lives.”

He added: “And we finally cracked this really challenging scene.

“He grabbed me, picked me up – I can’t tell if I initiated the next moment, if it was him or I – but, a kiss transpired between the two of us.

“I’m going to say that Daniel initiated it and I was very taken aback.

“I took a moment, caught my breath, and I looked out and said, ‘So, does this make me a Bond Girl?’”

No Time To Die will be released in UK cinemas on April 3, 2020.
