Billie Eilish’s incredible transformation since first finding fame as she headlines Glastonbury

Pop icon Billie Eilish makes history at Glastonbury this year, becoming the youngest ever solo act to headline the Pyramid Stage at just 20 years old.

The star, famous for hits such as Bad Guy and You Should See Me In A Crown, has broken plenty of records in her career so far, also becoming the youngest person to headline Coachella in March this year and previously becoming the youngest person to win Album of the Year at the Grammys in 2019 at the age of 18.

Speaking about her Glastonbury headline slot in a recent interview, Eilish said she was “stoked” at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I’m constantly feeling like I’m undeserving of everything, and I think that’s a good thing,” she told Apple Music.

“But first of all, it makes you doubt everybody because you’re like: ‘Why would you choose me?’ But with that being said, that’s why I’m even more excited about it and stoked to be the youngest headliner ever.”

Despite her young age, the star has been on a transformative journey, having released her debut single Ocean Eyes at the tender age of 13 and growing up in front of the public.

When Billie uploaded her first track to Soundcloud in 2015 and released its lo-fi music video a few months later, the star had her hair dyed an icy platinum blonde, which she soon swapped for a light purple tone as hype began to grow around her early music.

As her fame grew, so did scrutiny of the star’s looks and body, with Billie often seen wearing loose, fitting baggy clothes in a bid to fend off criticism.

Appearing in a Calvin Klein ad in 2019, she opened up on her choice to wear clothes that didn’t reveal much of her body.

“That’s why I wear baggy clothes,” she said in her voiceover for the ad. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat a**,’ ‘she’s got a fat a**.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”

That same year, the star released her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go to critical acclaim, but not long after the album’s release, she swapped out her blue hair for black, dying her roots a neon green.

But for a star with less control over her privacy than the average teen, the striking look came with one downside – she was instantly recognisable wherever she went.

It eventually led to the star ditching the look in favour of a golden blonde hue that made her able to blend in more easily.

“I couldn’t go anywhere with that hair because it was so obviously me,” Eilish told Elle in 2021. “I wanted anonymity.”

She recalled going to a public park with her friend and having a new sense of freedom with blonde hair, adding: “I was like, ‘No, I can’t take off my hood!’ I was terrified of the paparazzi and these stalkers I’ve had. But my friend was like, ‘Don’t worry: You’re okay. Nothing’s gonna happen.’ And I took my hood off, and I felt like a new person.”

Billie’s new blonde hair also ushered in a new era for the singer with her second album Happier Than Ever arriving in July 2021, along with a blonde bob with fringe and a new wardrobe to boot.

The star swapped out her previous baggy clothes for a new look that oozed classic Hollywood glamour, surprising fans when she appeared on the June 2021 cover of Vogue wearing a pink corset and latex gloves.

Billie revealed the look of the photoshoot was actually her idea, because she wanted to try something new.

“I’ve literally never done anything in this realm at all,” she told the magazine. “Y’know, besides when I’m alone and sh*t.”

She went on to explain that she chose to wear a corset because she’s insecure about her stomach, saying that body positivity is “all about what makes you feel good”.

“If you want to get surgery, go get surgery,” Billie said. “If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, f**k it – if you feel like you look good, you look good.”
