it will close another 12 bank branches this year, bringing the number of branches set to close in 2023 to at least 122.

Bank bosses blamed a lack of demand for in-person services for the decision to close the high street outlets.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

“Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence though our Barclays Local network, live in over 200 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our new banking pods.

“We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”


These are the latest Barclays branches to have been confirmed as closing this year:

  • 29/30 High Street, Windsor- August 23
  • 6 Market Place, Harleston – TBC
  • 14 Market Hill, Diss – August 23
  • 27 Market Hill, Framlingham – August 25
  • 9 The Bulwark, Brecon – August 25
  • 41 Market Place, Newark – August 17
  • 30/32 Bridge Street, Worksop – August 24
  • 35 Frederick Street, Birmingham – August 18
  • 45 High Street, Biggleswade – August 18
  • 351/359 Soho Road, Birmingham – August 24
  • 18 Stony Street, Frome – August 23
  • 59 Grove Street, Wilmslow – August 25.

To maintain its in-person services, the bank is operating pop-up sites and launching banking pods, which are semi-permanent sites that can be relocated to different areas.

Barclays currently operates 200 pop-up sites with plans for another 70, alongside 10 banking pods.

The bank also has a support van service to provide financial advice for savers. People can also access basic banking services at their local Post Office.

At the Post Office, a person can withdraw money and make payments. A woman from Devizes, Wiltshire, after her local Barclays closed.

She said: “Having the Devizes branch closed down has made sure it’s harder for me to access actual face to face support.

“It’s meant that if I have a problem, I have to call or use my mobile banking app to access support.

“Any time I call I’m not able to get hold of anyone in the UK, and sometimes there is a noticeable language barrier, making it even more stressful.”

She claims she only discovered by chance the branch was closing, as she was not contacted by the bank to tell her about the closure.
