“The seven day switching service and a decent choice of more ethically-minded banks mean there’s no reason to stay put.

“Ultimately, things won’t change until banks see that we’re voting with our feet – and are told in no uncertain terms why.”

Joanna, 71, is a retiree based in Winchester, who used to be a customer of HSBC (first direct).

She said: “Within the last few years or so, I began to think about how I personally could reduce my own carbon impact.

“This review included consideration of where my money is saved and invested, including the source of my occupational pension.

“Having done more research through the Ethical Consumer organisation, I did find very low scores for the HSBC in terms of fossil fuel and climate change.

“This meant I could no longer bank with HSBC and I started considering alternative banks. I admit to having misgivings about this change as the customer service I had received over many years including the convenience of being able to access a ‘real person’ 24/7 was very helpful to me.

“However, I am now retired and believe the importance and peace of mind of no longer supporting the HSBC far outweighs the convenience of its service.”
