Sebastian Vettel says he is happy to be back racing in Baku for this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, after taking his and Aston Martin’s best finish of 2021 at last year’s event.
Starting 11th on the grid, Vettel scythed his way through the field at the Baku City Circuit, with late problems for Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton promoting him to second place by the flag.
The German has expressed his happiness at returning to the streets of Azerbaijan’s capital for the 2022 event.
“It’s great to be back at Baku,” Vettel said.
“It has been one year since I took my first podium with Aston Martin at this track, so this is a special race for me.
“It will be interesting to see how the new cars adapt to the circuit, especially with the mix of fast and slow speeds around the straights and tight corners, but I am ready to get back out in Azerbaijan.”
Stroll excited to see Aston’s Baku potential
Vettel’s teammate Lance Stroll did not have such a happy time in Baku last year, hitting the wall in qualifying and then suffering a tyre blowout midway through the race.
However, the Canadian said he was eager to see how Aston Martin would go at Baku this time, with cars that look and behave differently from those of previous years.
“Last year was a tricky race for me, despite the overall success of the team, but I am ready to take on this circuit again,” Stroll explained.
“The mix of long straights and tighter corners require a careful set-up compromise, so it will be interesting to see how these new rules work.
“I’m excited to see how we can perform this time around.”
