Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in some new faces this January to help turn the club’s fortunes around in the second half of the campaign. The Spaniard has a great springboard to build on ahead on the New Year following Saturday’s 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
It’s already crystal clear that the Arsenal hierarchy are firmly behind Arteta and won the Gunners will be looking to back their manager in the January transfer market.
Funds are likely to be limited though, which means Arsenal may need to raise cash through sales before putting their hands into their pockets.
The squad is already way too big and the club struggled to get several players off the books earlier this summer.
Here are five names that could arrive in north London at the turn of the year when the January transfer window opens…
Yves Bissouma – Brighton
Bissouma’s agent Michael N’Cho claims the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal have registered an interest in his client.
The Brighton star is a similar player to summer signing Thomas Partey and it would therefore be a surprise if the Gunners were to make their move.
Yet it’s easy to see why Bissouma has been linked with the Big Six clubs in recent months.
He bossed Declan Rice yesterday in their 2-2 draw with West Ham and looks destined to play Champions League football in the future.
Brighton boss Graham Potter has said on the player’s future: “There have been no approaches.
“As I’ve said before, just because it’s in the media, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. My focus is on Yves and how I can help him improve and I think he’s still got some improvement to make.
“That’s my focus with him, to try and help him reach his full potential. He’s got some work to do yet, so that’s what we are focusing on.”
Houssem Aouar – Lyon
Fabrizio Romano believes Arsenal are expected to return for Aouar, after failing with two bids in October.
He’s a player that Arteta would love to bring to the Emirates Stadium and the Frenchman is intrigued by Arsenal’s interest.
“I think they will try again for sure,” Romano told The Arsenal Lounge at the beginning of December.
“Now we have to know what will happen with [Dominik] Szoboszlai, they are waiting on his final decision.
“But immediately after Szoboszlai signs with another club, they could move again for Aouar. They have already spoke with his agent.
“It is not easy to sign Aouar in January, but he is at the top of the list for Arsenal. He’s a favourite for Arteta, it’s the same for the board. So, yes, in my opinion they will try again.”
Julian Brandt – Borussia Dortmund
It’s a surprise target but according to The Athletic, Arsenal have considered a swoop for the Borussia Dortmund winger.
Brandt has struggled for form this season and has regressed in recent months following his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019.
The German international can play out wide or as a No 10, an area Arteta is keen to improve.
Any move may depend on whether Brandt returns to form under new caretaker boss Edin Terzic.
Vincius Junior – Real Madrid
There has been speculation this week regarding a potential loan deal for Real Madrid flop Vinicius Jr.
While Los Blancos remain confident Vinicius will come good, he is yet to live up to expectations following his £38million move from Flamengo in 2017.
Arsenal are set to explore a temporary deal and if Real Madrid are keen on sending him to north London with their midfielder Dani Ceballos, this could prove to be a good deal for the Gunners.
Vinicius is lacking confidence after Karim Benzema was caught on camera telling his Real Madrid team-mates not to pass to him at half-time of their Champions League group stage clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.
The stakes are currently high at Arsenal, so it may not be the best environment for his development.
