manager has been handed a boost ahead of a two-legged quarter-final against next month. Sacha Boey, the German giants’ marquee January arrival, is reportedly in line to miss both matches after suffering a muscle injury in training.

Boey has endured a troubled start to life at the Allianz Arena, making only two Bundesliga appearances before a muscle tear banished him to the sidelines. The 23-year-old was only just approaching full match fitness by the time a fresh injury took hold in training.

A statement from Bayern read: “We will be without full-back Sacha Boey for the next few weeks. The new arrival this winter suffered a torn muscle in his left hamstring during training on Wednesday. The diagnosis was confirmed by the FC Bayern medical unit.”

German news outlet Bild claim Boey is set to miss six weeks which, if true, would see him return to the pitch two weeks after the quarter-final second leg against Arsenal.

Boey was a major £30million signing for the Bavarian club after impressing in his three seasons with Galatasaray. His absence will therefore come as a handy boost for Arteta, who will naturally hope to make it to the semi-finals without his players expending too much energy.

A separate injury blow to Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer may also help the Gunners manager’s cause if it puts his place in doubt for the upcoming Champions League contest.

Manager Thomas Tuchel agreeing to vacate his post at the end of the season is another indicator of the unrest at Bayern. An easy ride would suit Arteta down to the ground as he prepares his players for a daunting Premier League title run-in.

Arsenal are currently top of the table with 10 games to play, but Liverpool are level on points and Manchester City are only one behind. The Gunners’ next game is against City at the Etihad Stadium after the international break.
