Arsenal backed to finish above Man Utd but Jamie Carragher wary of ‘big Gunners problem’ | Football | Sport

Arsenal have been backed to finish above Manchester United in the Premier League this season by Jamie Carragher. However, the Liverpool legend is wary that injuries could derail the Gunners and open the door for the Red Devils.

United beat Arsenal 3-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday to make it four wins in a row for Erik ten Hag‘s side. Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season but impressed many with their performance, and still sit top of the table.

Mikel Arteta led his team to a fifth-placed finish last term, ahead of United. Carragher believes Arsenal are a better team than United despite Sunday’s result.

However, he admits their squad is stronger than the Gunners’, which could have a big impact on the final standings. Carragher told the Overlap: “I think Arsenal will finish above Manchester United.

“Arsenal are a better team than United right now, because Mikel Arteta is three years in, Erik ten Hag is just starting, who has gone a little bit more pragmatic as he’s unable to play the way Arsenal do right now. I think in 2-3 years’ time, the way Arsenal perform, that’s how Manchester United will be playing.

“Playing from the back all the time, trying to play through the lines – I admire what Ten Hag has done, but right now I do think Arsenal have the edge. But squad wise, that’ll be a big problem – if you get injuries to certain players, I think Manchester United’s squad is better.”

Carragher’s Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville agrees that both Arsenal and Chelsea are currently better placed to finish in the top four than United. Neville recently said: “I think City, Liverpool and Tottenham will finish in the top three. Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United [to battle for fourth].

“You think Liverpool will come good don’t you because of what they’ve done. I think United will struggle to get into the top four personally.

“I just think Tottenham and Liverpool and City will, I think it’ll be between Arsenal, Chelsea and United. I just think the other two are slightly better.

“United will have to dig in really deep to win those two games against Arsenal and Liverpool. Liverpool could’ve equalised and Arsenal were good for large parts.

“There’s a long way to go, if you said to me a few weeks ago they’d finish fifth I’d bite your hand off. Fifth wouldn’t be a terrible result for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag from where they were.”
