Antoine Griezmann has expressed his desire to end his playing career in MLS following Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami. The Atletico Madrid forward, 32, is in the twilight of his career but still believes he has much to offer in La Liga first.
Griezmann is one of football’s most decorated stars with a World Cup, a Spanish Cup and a La Liga title to his name. Having won almost every trophy imaginable, apart from the Champions League, the Frenchman is assessing his options as he edges toward retirement.
One option Griezmann has discussed is a move to MLS, specifically to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami franchise. Back in 2018 he admitted to wanting to join Beckham’s team, saying: “If Beckham wants me in his club, then I’ll go.”
The attacker has now reaffirmed his desire to move to the league due to his love for American sports – but not before he targets more silverware at Atletico.
“I’ve always said that my objective would be to end there. Because I like American sports, I’d like to play in MLS and to enjoy playing there – to be competitive, to be able to win there and to play at my top level,” he said speaking to Mail Sport.
“But first of all, I’d like to continue to make history here. To win titles here with Atletico. We’ll see obviously in the future but for me one of my objectives is to end up playing in MLS.”
A move to MLS could see the forward once again play alongside Lionel Messi. The pair spent two seasons together at Barcelona during a difficult spell for the team.
Despite winning the Copa del Rey together the team failed to claim a LaLiga title or the Champions League. After 102 games for the Catalan club, Griezmann sought a loan move back to Atletico with the transfer becoming permanent a year later.
“He’s an incredible player and I think the best thing MLS has done is to sign up Leo – just for advertising and also for the sports quality,” he said in reference to Messi’s high profile move to join the American soccer league.
“It’s my objective – to end my football career there, to be able to enjoy the league and all the other sports leagues there because I really follow them. I’m a true fan.”
Griezmann’s next game for Atletico will see them face Real Betis in the league, while Lionel Messi eyes his first trophy for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup final against Nashville.
