AlphaTauri reveal cause of Yuki Tsunoda’s DNS

AlphaTauri have revealed a braking issue denied Yuki Tsunoda the chance to start the Italian Grand Prix.

The team were in dreamland at their home race at Monza a year ago, Pierre Gasly claiming a shock first career victory.

But the tables turned completely this time around with neither Gasly nor team-mate Tsunoda able to make it to the finish – or in Tsunoda’s case take the start at all.

Gasly began from the pit lane after taking his fourth new power unit of the season, but did not see the chequered flag.

AlphaTauri’s technical director, Jody Egginton, revealed Tsunoda was troubled by brake problems on his laps to the grid, with the team unable to find a fix in time for the race start, while a “system issue” was Gasly’s downfall.

“Unfortunately, the race was over before it got going for both drivers,” Egginton told the AlphaTauri website.

“Yuki reported a braking issue on his laps to the grid which, as hard as the guys tried, could not be resolved, forcing his retirement.

“Then a system issue identified in Pierre’s car early on meant we had to retire that car also. Frustratingly, we were not able to turn the strong performance shown by Pierre on Friday into points.

“Likewise, Yuki was not able to get further important race mileage and experience under his belt. As such, we were not able to take the fight to our closest competitors.

“However, the package again showed itself to be competitive and everyone will be pushing to ensure we carry this into the next races, with the focus on recovering ground to our closest competitors.”

AlphaTauri remain P6 in the Constructors’ Championship heading to the Russian Grand Prix, although the gap to Alpine ahead has increased to 11 points after the French team saw both of their drivers make the top 10 at Monza.

Fernando Alonso crossed the line P8, while Esteban Ocon collected a single point for a P10 finish.
